For its first 600 years Helsingborg was a Danish Town, which surrounded the huge fortifications up on the heights. The only survivor from the original fortress is the tower Kärnen. War and epidemics battered the town. The region of Skåne became Swedish in 1658, but the struggle for Helsingborg continued. Finally, in 1710, a battle saw off the Danes for the last time
